Individual Counseling

What is counseling?

Counseling is a form of talk therapy with a licensed and trained therapist. During counseling, the psychologist will listen to your current concerns and help identify the origins of your concerns as well as make a plan for change and improvement. Everything about us is rooted in our brain’s hard wiring and in our experiences. Counseling provides opportunities to understand our “wiring” and our experiences and how they interact together.

What is the process like?

Counseling is unique to each person and their presenting concern but follows a similar framework. The psychologist will first start by learning more about you and your presenting concern. The psychologist will then collaborate with you to identify the main concerns that you would like to work on, and then create a personalized treatment plan to address those concerns. The therapist will work within their education and framework to offer new tools and strategies that support your goals. The therapeutic process utilizes evidence-based strategies, meaning that research has shown that these therapeutic techniques are typically successful when used to treat these presenting concerns.

What is your therapeutic approach?

All therapeutic approaches are evidence-based. The main techniques utilized are cognitive-behavioral, including acceptance and commitment therapy (or ACT). ACT is a framework that helps a person identify their personal values and then live a life that is aligned with those values.
